Groundhog Day Revisited: Philanthropy in San Antonio

We’ve all seen the 1993 Bill Murray classic Groundhog Day (and if you haven’t – stop what you’re doing and go watch it before returning). In case there are any newbies, we won’t spoil anything too major, but the general premise is that Bill Murray’s character gets a little tired of the everyday monotony.  In the movie, Groundhog Day is approaching, and as a tired weatherman, he dreads covering a “silly” holiday like Groundhog day. Well, life decides to teach him a lesson by repeating the same day over, and over, and over again. He wakes up on Groundhog Day every day and lives his life differently each day to mix it up a little. Eventually, his frustration is only relieved by gaining a bit of a softer heart, sparking a streak of philanthropy in his character. After a change of heart and learning to be grateful, he wakes up on a different day with a new perspective. (157)

With Groundhog Day 2020 recently passing, we learned that Punxatawny Phil has forecasted an early Spring, and with that, we can be excited about philanthropic opportunities in our beautiful city. This Spring, we don’t have to feel like Bill Murray’s character did. Check out the following charitable events happening soon:

March 1st – “Empty Bowls” by the San Antonio Potters Guild
Head down to the Southwest School of Art for the “Empty Bowls” event put on by the San Antonio Potters Guild. For only $25 a ticket, you can select a handmade bowl made by a local San Antonio artisan, and even better, have a serving of soup and bread donated by local restaurants and bakeries. If the bowl wasn’t enough, you get to leave knowing you supported a local San Antonio artist and the art community as a whole. Win, win!

March 6th – The Texas Brigades Annual Fundraiser
Did someone say an open bar and dinner? Get dressed up and ready for the “Southern Cocktail” theme at the Texas Brigades Annual Fundraiser, benefitting the wildlife-focused leadership program for high-school-aged kids. There will even be a silent and live auction, and valuable raffles. Have a night on the town and benefit a special group of kids.

March 21st – The 2020 Stride for Sight 5K Run/Walk
Together, the Lions Sight Research Foundation, San Antonio Eye Bank and Guide Dogs of Texas, Inc. are throwing the Stride for Sight 5K Run/Walk, a pet-friendly and family-friendly race benefitting the three organizations. Grab your family, your doggos, and head out early (6:30 AM) to Comanche Park for a fun and philanthropic time!

March 23rd – The 15th Annual Ronald McDonald House Charity Golf Classic
The Ronald McDonald House is at it again. Join the charity on March 23rd for their 15th annual event, starting at 8:30 AM. For single-player entry, you gain a golf spot and a goody bag, and a ticket to the awards gala later that night. Along with that, you get the satisfaction of knowing you’ve helped a charitable organization while still having fun.
