We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: at SOGO, we’re family. We wanted to start a blog series just so you can get to know our family, so we’re kicking it off with our Director of Sales & Development, Cherri Kuhns. Fun fact: we also asked Cherri what her life motto hashtag would be. She couldn’t think of an answer, so we thought we’d assign one to her: #ladyboss obviously.
Q: How did you get started in your career?
I started out as a business owner in my twenties. I owned and operated two tanning salons in Michigan for about 15 years. When it was time to move on and I sold my businesses, I knew that I needed to find something that would still satisfy my entrepreneurial drive while being a very people-centric endeavor. I also really felt the need to do meaningful work. The insurance industry offered all those things.
I was able to join forces with a friend who had a growing insurance agency, and who was really great at cultivating relationships. His success story is really what drew me in initially because I was able to see how much he helped his clients and really loved what he was doing at the same time. I still work for Josh (SOGO’s CEO), and I love it!
Q: What do you love most about SOGO?
I love that SOGO is a family-owned company and is built upon a foundation of integrity. This principle guides everything we do from employee relations to client interactions to serving the community. I felt at home with SOGO from day one…they’re MY PEOPLE!
Q: What is your favorite part about being a sales and development director?
I am passionate about growing SOGO and finding new ways to help our clients accomplish their goals. I always have my eye on expanding the resources and products we can offer to our commercial clients. Every day brings new challenges and I am always eager to help our team improve with every new client we work with.
Q: How long have you lived in San Antonio? What’s your favorite SA-story or event?
My family moved to San Antonio in September 2016. I grew up in a small town in Michigan and love that San Antonio manages to somehow feel like a small town despite its size. I am intrigued by its culture and the people.
Q: Do you have any advice on insurance in general? Why is it important for consumers to have insurance?
This probably seems odd, but I actually think that insurance is fascinating! So I could really geek out and share a ton of reasons why insurance is important. But, the most compelling reason is that our lives are filled with so many variables and potential pitfalls, why wouldn’t you want a safety net? A good, sound insurance strategy softens the blows we are sure to endure at some time or another. That kind of assurance is powerful.
Q: What makes SOGO different from other agencies?
Our support staff is top-notch! Our clients know that they aren’t just a number to us. I love reading our reviews because you can see how important the service is to people when it comes to their insurance.
Also, on the commercial side of things, we approach our business clients as partners in their overall strategy for the company. We don’t just place their policies and move on. We work with them throughout the policy term and into their renewals each year to ensure that they are operating with risk management goals in mind.
