Black History Month: Black-Owned Businesses in San Antonio

We’re nearly through Black History Month, but it’s not too late to show your support for this particular month of awareness. So we’re bringing you a list of black-owned businesses in the San Antonio area that we are celebrating and promoting this month. From food to wellness to performance arts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy while supporting a movement that hopes to end racial injustice in our community and provide growth opportunities for minorities in business.

Bayseas Catfish House – You don’t have to travel to far-off places to find a delicious plate of Soul Food that will have you dancing in your seat. Take Bayseas Catfish House, for example, sitting on the Northeast side of town. Don’t let the relatively small building fool you – there is a BIG menu waiting for you. All the soul food classics like fried catfish, smothered pork chops, oxtails, chitterlings, and fried chicken are made fresh in-house just for you. Mr. Hill has been in the business for over 40 years, learning his cooking style from French chefs in Louisiana. The gumbo is famous and spicy, so order a nice big glass of sweet tea to wash it all down. You can call in your order if you’re short on time or prefer to eat your homemade meals in the comfort of your own home.

Studio SEE Tattoos – Have you been considering getting some permanent ink but just haven’t bit the bullet yet? Now’s the time to commit and visit Studio SEE for some lasting artwork. Also, don’t miss the Black History Month special (running through the end of the month!), where you can get $50-$100 Black Power tattoos. Chantrelle LeNoir owns and operates this tattoo studio while also producing beautiful tattoo pieces for lucky patrons. With periodic guest artists visiting the studio, you’re sure to get a talented and highly sought-after artist by calling ahead and making an appointment, though walk-ins are welcome.

Anointed SkinKare – If tattoos aren’t your thing, no need to worry! You can still pamper yourself at Anointed SkinKare. Services include different skincare regimens that fit every type of spa day you could imagine. Microdermabrasion, exfoliation, facial massage, and the reduction of dead surface skin cells will leave you happy and glowing with fresh and rejuvenated skin. Deep Pore Cleansings, LED therapy, and mask treatments are also on the menu. If you want to leave feeling extra smooth, book a body wax. The hours are convenient, with a few late-night windows in case you can’t sneak away during the daytime. Book an appointment today.

Black Box Music & Arts – Head to the West Side of San Antonio to visit Black Box Music & Arts, the closest thing to Hollywood, right at our front door. This magical business is a creative space where performing and visual artists “gather to learn, collaborate, celebrate, and contemplate.” Acting classes, workshops, musical groups, and more are available within these walls. In addition, independent and professional instructors teach students to reach their personal creative goals. You can even book a party or event here, so if you get a little bit shy, gather your closest friends and make it a whole private event.
